The rights of a ship passenger in situations of delay or cancellation

Terms and conditions vary between shipping companies, so in case of problems it is recommended to first attempt to settle the matter with the shipping company in question.

In case of cancellations or delays, the basic rights of a passenger are as follows:

  • If the departure of a ship or ferry is cancelled or significantly delayed, the passenger has a right to a refund on the part of the ticket that is still unused.
  • If the journey of the vessel is discontinued and the passenger cannot be reasonably expected to continue the journey, the shipping company must arrange for transport for the passenger and their luggage to the original destination through another means suitable.
  • If the company fails to arrange alternative transport, the passenger has the right to claim refund for the price of the ticket.
  • If due to sea damage or other matter concerning the ship or ferry the passenger must remain at land, the shipping company is responsible for the passenger’s maintenance and the costs incurred.

The shipping company is responsible for personal injury caused by events during the journey and damage caused by the delay to the customer, if the damage in question has been caused by a mistake or neglect from the part of the shipping company or a person authorised by the company.

The shipping company is responsible for any damage to or loss of luggage caused to the passenger if such loss or damage occurs or if the damage has been caused by the mistake or neglect from the part of the shipping company or a person authorised by the company.

Cancelling the journey

If you choose not to take a sea journey you have booked and have not made your cancellation sufficiently early, you are generally required to pay the price of the ticket.

You may apply for a refund if you cannot go on the journey due to sudden illness or some other unexpected and grave circumstance. The shipping company should be informed about the obstacle without delay.

A package tour gives added protection

The ship journey may constitute one element of a package tour, in which case the traveller is protected under general package tour terms and conditions from the moment of purchase until the end of the journey. These include the right to cancellation and the right to assistance in problem situations.

A package tour constitutes a pre-arranged combination of travel services bought together, such as a package consisting of a return ferry journey to Sweden and hotel accommodation in Stockholm. Short cruises with a maximum duration of 24 hours do not constitute package tours.
