Claiming compensation for a delay in bus or coach service

Like any other business, bus and coach companies are responsible for the functionality of their services. It is possible to claim compensation from the company if the service does not correspond to the promises made about it.

Terms and conditions of bus and coach companies may vary, so in case of problems it is worthwhile to attempt to settle the matter with the company. The same applies to possible refund for unused tickets.

  • You may demand a reduction in the price of a ticket due to deficient service when a bus service is delayed significantly.
  • You may claim a refund on the price of a ticket in case of cancellation of the service it was bought for.
  • Refunds for unused tickets printed on paper or loaded onto a travel card are subject to the terms and conditions of the bus or coach company in question.

Compensation for financial loss

If you have suffered financial loss due to a delay or cancellation of a bus or coach service, you may be eligible for compensation – for example if the bus is running late due to a technical fault or the timetable information distributed by the company is inaccurate.

  • It is possible to claim compensation e.g. for additional travel costs incurred due to a missed connection.
  • The claim must contain sufficient evidence of the financial loss by enclosure of a receipt of the additional expenses or through other reliable means.
  • The passenger must strive to limit the amount of financial damage to the best of their ability. In order to limit the damage, the passenger should contact the bus or coach company as soon as the problem arises.
  • No compensations are offered for inconvenience or mental suffering.
