Children as consumers

A parent can affect a child's position as a consumer

Parents have the right to make decisions about a child's purchases and the type of marketing their children are exposed to.

A child starts to develop consumer habits and encounters advertising and marketing at a very early age. A child does not have the same ability as an adult does to understand commerce and his or her position as a consumer, however. Raising a child is a parent's right and responsibility.

A parent has the right to

  • make decisions about a child's purchases
  • decide whether marketing material will be given to a child
  • expect advertisers to be accountable for the kind of advertising a child is surrounded by
