HDTV

Be familiar with the equipment needed to watch HD programming

The abbreviation ”HD” on a TV set indicates that the device is a High Definition Television. HD programming features a higher resolution than current digital broadcasts.

For the time being, HD programming in Finland is primarily limited to Pay-TV channels on satellite and cable networks.

Receiving HD broadcasts requires a TV set or a combination of a TV and digital receiver that support the technical requirements of HD programming.

The limitations concerning use of high definition technology aren’t always clearly mentioned in the marketing and sales of television sets.

  • The consumer should ask the retailer what kind of support a particular TV model has for watching HD channels now and in the future.
  • The consumer may demand compensation from the retailer if the actual features of the television do not correspond with the information provided in marketing.

The introduction of HD broadcasts does not affect the functioning of current digital receivers and digital television sets. As normal digital broadcasts on most channels will continue to use current broadcasting technology for several years, there is no pressing need at present to upgrade one’s equipment.

Receiving HD broadcasts on cable and satellite networks

High definition broadcasts on cable networks can be received using devices that have ”Cable Ready HD” certification. The majority of HD channels are for paying subscribers only, which means that they can only be received by those who have subscribed to and paid for a channel package provided by a cable television operator.

  • Cable Ready HD certification guarantees that the television or digital receiver supports smart card linking and works on all Finnish cable television networks.
  • Cable Ready HD certification may not always be prominently displayed on the television set itself, but the website www.kaapelitelevisio.fi maintains a list of certified television sets.

HD broadcasts may also be received via satellite. This requires a satellite dish and a digital tuner capable of satellite reception. The tuner may be built in the television set or provided in a separate digital set-top box, which can be purchased from the service provider in conjunction with subscribing to the channel package or separately from a home appliance retailer.

Television sets denoted ”Full HD” and ”HD Ready” require a separate compatible HD digital set-top box for receiving high definition broadcasts.

Receiving HD broadcasts on terrestrial television networks

Terrestrial television networks based on antennas are not, for the time being, used to broadcast HD programming and devices designed to receive such broadcasts are not sold at present.

Consumers wishing to receive high definition broadcasts in the future on television sets denoted ”Full HD” and ”HD Ready” need a separate HD-capable digital set-top box to watch such channels.
