A Dispute Concerning Shares in a Car Rental Company Is Being Considered by the District Court

Consumer Ombudsman assisting purchasers of shares in Rental Erikoisautovuokraamo Oy

Rentmar Oy has sold shares in Rental Erikoisautovuokraamo Oy to consumers. The bill of sale says that the shares entitle the holder to rent special vehicles at reduced prices. According to the terms the buyer is entitled to cancel the transaction "if the matter has essential significance". Consumers have tried to take advantage of the one-week cancellation right allowed by the terms, which are open to interpretation, but Rentmar Oy has demanded payment nonetheless. It has also used a lawyer to collect payment. The Consumer Agency knows of at least 11 buyers in the Helsinki region who have refused to pay and been taken to the district court. The Consumer Agency has decided to assist consumers in four of these cases and will probably decide to assist others as well.

In the Consumer Ombudsman's opinion Rentmar Oy's demands are clearly groundless. According to the contract terms, consumers have the right to cancel a transaction and in case of defects to dissolve a transaction.
